Wood Slice Ornaments

Before we get to the how-to, let’s talk about painting wood slice ornaments.

More specifically, let’s discuss where to buy wood slices, what paints are best, and whether or not you need to prime the wood first.

Where to Buy Wood Slices

I use and love these Plaid unpainted wood rounds.

They are just the right size, and come in under a dollar a piece! They’re a great value for a high quality product.

I use and love these paints for wood slice ornaments, as well as other crafts and DIYs!

A good, acrylic paint is perfect fine for wood slices. You don’t have to invest in anything fancy!

I’ll link to my exact colors below, but feel free to choose any colors you love best.

For this project, I found that a mix of warm and cool colors look best.

Best Gold Paint for Wood

Hands down, this is the very best gold paint for wood.

It is water-based, has no odor, and is super shiny!!!

This is the first time I’ve used it and will never go back to anything else.

Do You Need to Prime Wood Before Painting Wood Slices with Acrylic Paints?

You definitely do not need to prime your wood before painting.

I didn’t, and because I used high quality wood slices, it turned out fine!

If you want to give them a quick wipe-down to get off excess dust, feel free to do that. It won’t hurt anything.

Instructions

  1. Start by drilling a hole at the top of your wood slice (if using for ornaments).
  2. Next, trace a circle that almost covers your entire wood slice.
  3. Use two coats of chalk paint to paint your circle, letting dry between coats. I used a hairdryer on the "cool" setting to make this go faster.
  4. Next, using your blue and orange paints, take a small brush and paint gentle "waves" across your wood slice. These should go from the bottom of your wood slice to about halfway up.
  5. Let dry.
  6. Next, use your Treasure Gold paint to paint a simple sun shape. Add dashes/lines as sunbeams.
  7. Let dry and you're done!
